According to Automotive News: https://www.autonews.com/volkswagen/scout/an-scout-production-launch-timelines-0408/

Traveler SUV production is expected to begin in September 2028

Terra pickup production expected to begin March 2030

ARTICLE SUMMARY:

New data suggests that the timeline for Scout Motors’ highly anticipated debut has shifted further into the future than previously expected. According to recent projections from AutoForecast Solutions, the brand’s production schedule is being recalibrated to better align with shifting market demands.

Updated Production Timelines
Industry analysts now expect a staggered rollout for the new lineup:
  • Traveler SUV: Production is projected to begin in September 2028.
  • Terra Pickup: Manufacturing is slated to start in March 2030.
While Scout plans to produce a few dozen units for testing in late 2026, the bulk of 2027 will likely be dedicated to refining assembly processes and employee training before customer-ready vehicles emerge.

Strategic Shift to EREV
In response to cooling demand for pure battery-electric (BEV) trucks, Scout is pivoting its strategy. CEO Scott Keogh confirmed that the brand will prioritize the "Harvester" extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) powertrain.

  • Market Demand: Currently, 87% of the 160,000 reservation holders have opted for the EREV version.
  • Model Popularity: The Traveler SUV accounts for roughly 70% of all early bookings.
Production Outlook & Capacity
The manufacturing facility in Blythewood, South Carolina, is designed for high volume, though initial forecasts for the individual models remain conservative:

  • Projected Annual Volume: Roughly 40,000 units for the Traveler and 35,000 for the Terra.
  • Total Capacity: The plant can support over 200,000 vehicles per year, leaving the door open for Scout to act as a contract manufacturer for other Volkswagen Group brands.
  • Lifecycle: Analysts expect these models to stay in production for approximately nine years.
Expert Perspective
"It’s more important to come to market with a product that works... Twenty years from now, the brand's success won't be determined by whether it launched 12 months later than originally planned." — Stephanie Brinley, S&P Global Mobility
While Scout is a subsidiary of the Volkswagen Group, it is navigating the typical hurdles of a startup—including building new platforms and electrical architectures from the ground up. Despite the delays, the brand aims to capture about 1% of the U.S. market share by appealing to outdoors-oriented consumers.

I am not worried first we will see EREV's from GM and ford so they will be the first to offer and experience the Erev customer issues and real live data so actually you get to see if the technology is worth waiting for or not

My Daughter has a Scout SUV ordered and she will be venturing over to a Ford Bronco Hybrid / Erev her area Ford dealer is taking orders end of April most likely just for a spot to order once ford announced open orders. But I think we will all look back at this chapter and say why cannot both ice and EV's coexist why does one threaten the other or is it that we just cannot let go of what we know to learn what we don't. Learning at older ages can be exciting if we let ourselves go what do we have to loose one more day of our boring lives. Jump in the unknown let us all know what you find !!! That's why EV range anxiety can be made fun especially if you're a retired person with no emphasis on time just experiences. And before you know it you conquered one more of life's hurdles. Safe motoring to all !!!

Well said, some decent options out there now and more coming soon. I'm looking forward to seeing what Nissan does and maybe even possibly GMC. I need to replace my '15 Grand Cherokee at some point preferably with a body on frame SUV with 5-6K towing, a true low range transfer case and 33"ish tires. Right now Toyota is the only one that really checks those boxes at a "reasonable" quality and price point.

The point of my original comment is this: I spent my entire career in technology. Time and again I saw that those who reached too far - failed. If a rear engine was such a wonderful thing why have there been so few in the whole history of automobiles. Of course Volkswagen has experience but even they have not embraced rear engines in their current vehicle lineup.

I think they got boxed into a corner and had to scramble to come up with something with a gas motor in it. I'll be surprised if an EREV rear engine Scout sees the light of day. They may delay another couple of years and put the engine in the front but I guess we'll have to wait and see. In the meantime I hope they pivot again and keep the EV on somewhat of a schedule for release, I'd love to see the brand out there getting some attention.

Modern cars have a good place to put an engine and it's not hanging off over the rear axle.

Did I miss something that Scout was going to have a removable top and doors?

Ugh…wake me up in literally 3 years. In that time I will have leased a Rivian R2. And I bet the majority of those wanting the EREV are those who currently don’t drive an EV. You lose performance, are dependent on gas for nominal trips, and require maintenance compared to EV only. I’ve had my Tesla Model Y Performance for 3 years and absolutely $0 other than in-home charging and charging fees when vacationing. Same wipers, tires, and washer fluid. That’s all an EV really taxes you in upkeep. I tow my personal watercraft, transport my lab, enough legroom for all 5, and other than Elon and having a car that can easily get lost in a crowd, it has been the lowest maintenance, fastest vehicle, easiest and most fun to drive vehicle for me. I reserved the Traveler EV because I want what their prototype shows with the same things I’ve grown to love listed above. But a generator model that’s less quick, less EV range, likely to require maintenance, and now so far out that solid state technology will be the thing, I just don’t know if I can stay interested in an already outdated dream. The reservation $ is out of mind so I’ll just keep it for now in hopes they pivot with the times. But I can’t keep up any excitement with so many advancements that will occur over the next few years while Scout parades around their concept models that are already two years old.
