I'm having an issue with buying solar panels and battery big enough to matter but then I get to charge my car for "free".

My neighbor put up panels and I think he said he has a 25 year note on them.

Here's what to do if you have a detached garage. Get an array of panels on your garage roof enough to charge your car and replenish battery run a conduit from garage to home sub panel to where you can power 4 to 6 circuits your garage is totally independent of grid because it never had electricity. You don't have to get permits for sub panel you just pay up front cost one time and you cut your home electric in half and your never paying to charge your vehicle and when you do have an outage your fine your car is a backup battery along with home battery and it's replenished when the sun comes up all in 26 k solar home battery sub panel v2 charger hire solar guys once the crew who's doing the job get them to price out sub panel and conduit they know the landscape. This way your not tied into grid no net metering or shut off due to power company concerns. 12 to 16 panels check out Franklin Home battery great company.
