Scout Has a Solution To Range-Extending Gas Engine Cutting Tow Capacity in Half, CEO Says [Updated]

"We can handle the dynamics quite well," Scout CEO Scott Keogh said in regards to placing a gas engine at the rear end of Scouts.

f you’re excited about the reborn Scout Motors, you’re not alone. The South-Carolina-based Volkswagen subsidiary says it has more than 150,000 reservations for its upcoming Terra pickup and Traveler SUV, and enthusiasm has only increased since Scout announced that it was pivoting from an all-electric vision to embrace gasoline range-extenders. But that functionality supposedly was going to come with a caveat.

That makes sense, right? After all, the single most-cited obstacle to doing “truck stuff” (towing, hauling, pulling) with an EV is the resulting range penalty. Apart from cost, the availability of a range-extending generator should be all upside. Except a year ago Scout CEO Scott Keogh told Jay Leno with the Harvester range-extender powertrain the tow rating would drop 50% from 10,000 to 5,000 pounds in the Terra pickup. Naturally, as one would expect, the Internet went into an uproar from Reddit to forums. Today, we’re learning that Scout’s figured out a solution to its towing issue.

Details are slim, but during an Automotive Press Association event Motor Trend asked about the tow rating getting cut in half with the range-extender option. Keogh said, “I think we have the tool kit without a doubt. And we’ve got some solutions on that front, nothing I’m announcing now.”

Keogh refused to expand or explain what solution from the team’s “tool kit” would resolve the issue of cutting the range-extended powertrain’s tow rating in half, but the news gives buyers a new hope in terms of capability.

Based on the more than 2,700 confirmed reservations being tracked on the Scout EV forum, this will be relevant to more than 85% of of buyers. Only 13% of those raising their hand opted for the all-electric model.

Scout has leaned heavily into the truck-like qualities of its revived 4×4 nameplate. The Terra and Traveler will be body-on-frame EVs with solid rear axles and mechanical locking differentials. On the EV side, each offers an 800-volt architecture that should support high-throughput fast charging. Scout wants both trucks to offer 1,000 pound-feet of torque and hit 60 mph in just 3.5 seconds, while offering a minimum of 350 miles of range for the all-electric models. The “Harvester” range extender bumps the single-charge range to 500 miles, and of course, offers the convenience of quick fuel-ups.

Scout wants both models to offer 2,000 pounds of payload capacity (more than the Rivian R1T or R1S). The Traveler is expected to offer 7,000 pounds of towing, while the Terra would top 10,000 (R1S towing caps out at 7,700 pounds; the R1T at 11,000 pounds). Meanwhile, the Ram 1500 REV is aiming for 14,000 pounds of towing; whether that figure will come down with Ram’s own range extender remains to be seen.

All that said, there’s still plenty of time for things to change at Scout before production begins. Recent rumors suggest that won’t happen until 2028.

Note–This story was updated thanks to audio provided to The Drive from Scout from the event with Keogh’s exact words and answer to Motor Trend’s question. A previous version of this story incorrectly reported that Scout’s range-extended powertrain would drop tow ratings by 50%.

Drop it and go with a better option that can be carried as needed but not integral.
Here’s an idea that DOD is scooping up.

https://www.liquidpiston.com

Runs on ANY fuel and is lighter than any other current engines with better power and efficiency. Why DOD is using it on drones and power generation.

The rotary engine is cool, but that seems like vaporware at this time. That company could no produce 200K engines between now and 2029. What about longevity. My Army experience was the tools given to us 18-22 yr olds were not indestructible. Example, when we got the HUMMVV in 1988, the cook flipped it over because we were told it could not be flipped. On the bright side, it only took two dozen to flip it back and no one was hurt except the body panels. Those things had constant problems. I really liked my jeep and gamma goat. Slow, uncomfortable and reliable.

Sadly you are right after more study. However if they scale up size it would be an awesome portable inverter genset. Ex USN and Army here too.

If scout cant provide a hybrid with at least a 8k tow rating, I will have to look elsewhere. I believe the offer a turbo 4 Hybrid in other markets that could provide the needed KW to tow. They just need to beef up the Generator.

Scout's problem is they want to keep the Frunk as a feature. dump the Frunk, place the engine there, add a little more battery capacity and give it a new sub model or package name called 'towing'. Ford does it. You will have the standard version is X pounds of towing and the 'Tow Package' with what everyone seems to want.
I am fine with 5K.

VW hasn't been to profitable lately I think they're maybe an emphasis on that moving forward. So with delays and plant overages I think it's wise for Scout not to try and satisfy everyone. Let's get two models on the street first and then that buys us time to increase our offerings especially since we know battery tech advances are in the pipeline. Maybe with better battery tech that allows for more range which adds to towing. But regardless the delays and other offerings coming to market before Scout will defect to those other vehicles. So Scout needs to get two of their vehicles in production which means decision's need to be made for that to happen and have Scouts in peoples driveway's by end of 2028

But when corporate looks at this what percentage of buyers want the ability to tow but probably never will Tow ? Do we originally market to the larger crowd or the smaller crowd ??
Fixed it for you, In that case your towing audience is MUCH larger. If you're spending $70K plus on a truck it better be able to do truck things even if you never plan on doing those things.

In 10 years and 60K miles I've had passengers in the back of my Grand Cherokee maybe 4 times. Should I have got a Smartcar? Probably, but what if one day I need to have three people in my car?

That's what automakers are up against.
